India, June 14 -- Sugar production in India the world's second largest producer of the sweetener could fall as much as 15% in 2019/20 as severe drought hits a key growing region industry sources said. Sugar production is likely to fall to 28-29 million tonnes in the 2019/20 crop year starting from October down from 33 million tonnes this year a top official of the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSF) told Reuters.Maharashtra the country s second-biggest sugar producer could produce 6.5 million tonnes next season down 39.2% from the current crop year the official said.The ongoing drought situation in the state could see cane acreage shrink by at least 28% to 8.43 lakh hectare for the 2019-20 season against 11.62 lak...
