Mumbai, Jan. 29 -- Japanese markets swung between gains and losses before closing on a flat note. The Nikkei average finished marginally higher at 53.375.60 as government bonds showed mixed movement and the yen's sudden strength revived carry-trade unwind fears.
The broader Topix index closed up 0.28 percent at 3,545.30.
