Srinagar, Jan 27, Jan. 27 -- Locals and tourists have accused the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department of overcharging at the Gulmarg Gondola, alleging that a sharp hike in fares has turned the popular attraction into an unaffordable luxury for many. According to residents, the fare for the Gondola has been fixed at Rs.1,700 for Phase I and Phase II combined. However, passengers who get down at Phase I and then proceed to Phase II are reportedly charged an additional Rs.400, taking the total cost to Rs.2,100. Locals said the revised rates are a steep jump from earlier fares of around Rs.800 for both phases, placing the Gondola beyond the reach of many, particularly students and local families.
