Dhaka, Dec. 24 -- Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division has been appointed as the chief justice, succeeding Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed at the apex of the country's judiciary.

Justice Refaat had assumed the top judicial post during the political upheaval of 2024 following the student-led mass uprising.

Having reached the retirement age of 67, he is set to retire on Dec 27 and is currently in Saudi Arabia performing Umrah. In his absence, Justice Zubayer has been playing the role.

The government has officially issued a gazette on Wednesday appointing the new Chief Justice. He is scheduled to take the oath of office from President Md Sahabuddin at Bangabhaban.
