Dhaka, Jan. 5 -- A woman has been tied to an electric pole and assaulted in Rangpur city after being accused of robbery.

Footage of the incident has since gone viral on social media.

Rangpur Kotwali Police chief (OC) Shajahan said that the incident took place near Medical Mor in the city on Monday afternoon.

"We are investigating the matter," he said.

The video shows the woman, aged around 30, surrounded by a crowd while being tied to an electric pole.

The crowd included mostly men, but there were several women too.

A man in his 50s was seen hitting the woman with a stick while someone from the crowd urged him to stop.

The call for restraint made the attacker angry, and he walked up to the man who made the call to threaten him.
