Dhaka, March 12 -- A female garments worker has been run over and killed by a truck in the Bagher Bazar area of Gazipur Sadar Upazila, leading her colleagues to block the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in protest.

The protest by workers at the Golden Refit Garments Limited factory began around 8am on Wednesday. Shortly afterwards, they blocked the highway and brought traffic to a halt, according to Abdul Halim, chief of Joydebpur Police Station.

The deceased, 32-year-old Jannatul Ferdous Tamanna, was a senior operator at the factory's sewing section.

Tamanna was killed around 5:40am on Wednesday as she was crossing the highway on her way to the factory, the protesting workers say.
