Dhaka, July 8 -- After suspending steep tariffs for six months, US President Donald Trump has announced that the country will be imposing a 35 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods.

The announcement came on Monday as the US sent letters to 14 countries informing them of the new tariff rates.

Trump kicked off a trade war earlier in the year when he announced hikes on tariff rates on a number of countries, including allies. As countries scrambled to come to deals with the US, the American president says that the duties will take effect from Aug 1.

Trump announced substantial tariffs on over 100 countries on Apr 2. A week later, as world markets reeled, he suspended the tariffs for 90 days before hiking the rates on China alone.
