Dhaka, March 18 -- Jahangirnagar University has temporarily suspended 289 activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League for attacks on students during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests.

Nine teachers have also been suspended from their jobs over allegations of abetting the attacks.

Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan announced the decision after an emergency university syndicate meeting that ended at 3am on Tuesday.

The meeting began at 11am on Monday at the university's new administrative building.
