Bangladesh, July 30 -- The Supreme Court has acquitted former Awami League leader Md Mobarak Hossain in a war crimes case, overturning his 2014 death sentence on appeal.
A five-strong Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed delivered the verdict on Wednesday.
Mobarak served as the organising secretary of the Mogra Union unit of the Awami League in Brahmanbaria's Akhaura Upazila until 2012.
On Nov 24, 2014, the ICT-1, comprising justices M Enayetur Rahim, Jahangir Hossain, and Anwarul Haque, sentenced Mobarak to death for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
The tribunal ordered capital punishment by hanging, the maximum penalty under the law.
