Dhaka, Nov. 21 -- Three pedestrians have been killed after an earthquake caused a railing to collapse from a five-storey building on KP Ghosh Street in Dhaka's Bangshal.

Rafiqul Islam, chief of Bangshal Police Station, said: "A railing from a five-storey building collapsed and fell amid the earthquake."

Two of the pedestrians hit by the railing were killed on the spot. The third died after they were taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 5.5 quake hit 14km west-southwest of Bangladesh's Narsingdi at a depth of 10km around 10:38am local time.

Many of the capital's residents rushed to the streets in panic amid the quake.
