Dhaka, Dec. 19 -- Although the first funeral prayer for Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman Hadi was scheduled to held in Singapore, the Bangladesh High Commission has said the service will not go ahead there.

In a post on Facebook on Friday, the mission said the service had to be cancelled as the required clearance had not been received from the relevant authorities.

It expressed regret over the situation and urged members of the Bangladeshi community in Singapore to respect local laws.

Hadi had risen to prominence during the July Uprising and a movement calling for the banning of the Awami League. He had also announced plans to contest the upcoming parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.
