Dhaka, Dec. 31 -- A man has died after he fell ill after attending the funeral prayers of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The dead, identified as 56-year-old Nirob Hossain, hailed from Patuakhali's Bauphal Upazila.

According to police, he fell ill and collapsed on Wednesday afternoon while navigating the heavy crowd on Manik Mia Avenue after the funeral prayers concluded.

Fazlul Karim, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said: "He collapsed near the cemetery gate of the Parliament building at the north-west corner of Manik Mia Avenue.

"Those accompanying him rushed him to the emergency department of Suhrawardy Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead."
