Dhaka, Nov. 28 -- A man has been killed during a "late-night mugging" in Chattogram.

The incident occurred opposite the Chattogram District Council building in the port city's Kotwali Thana on Thursday night.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Md Ismail. He hailed from Lakshmipur, but lived in the city's Firingibazar area.

Police say Ismail was a tea hawker.

Abdul Karim, chief of Kotwali Police Station, said Ismail was headed to Firingibazar on a cycle when he was accosted by three muggers on the opposite side of the Chattogram District Council building.

Ismail was stabbed and seriously injured.

He was rescued and taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where the doctor-on-duty declared him dead.
