Dhaka, Dec. 30 -- Nahid Islam, convenor of National Citizen Party (NCP), an ally of Jamaat-e-Islami, has expressed grief over BNP chief Khaleda Zia's death, describing her as an "uncompromising leader".

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Nahid said: "Her courageous leadership in the anti-authoritarian movement showed the people of this country the path to realising their democratic rights."

He credited her with playing an "outstanding role" in establishing a parliamentary system of government and restoring a democratic environment in Bangladesh after the mass uprising of the 1990s.

Highlighting her political struggle, Nahid said Khaleda had faced repeated imprisonment and political setbacks but remained steadfast in her ideals.
