Dhaka, Nov. 17 -- Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Golam Porwar says the death sentence handed down to deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity fulfils the "public aspirations" of 180 million people.

In an immediate reaction after the verdict on Monday, Porwar underscored the sentencing as "an important day for justice".

"It was our demand that the interim government complete the trial of these heinous crimes against humanity before the election."

Addressing India, National Citizen Party's Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam said: "[Hasina] instructed the killing of more than a thousand people and is a death-row convict.
