Dhaka, Dec. 3 -- Amid intense debate and criticism, the Jamaat-e-Islami has declared Krishna Nandi as its candidate for the Khulna-1 seat for the parliamentary election.
To make this change, the party replaced its earlier nominee in the constituency formed by the minority-dominated Upazilas of Dakope and Batiaghata.
Nandi currently serves as president of the Hindu wing of Jamaat's Dumuria Upazila unit. His nomination had been the subject of widespread discussion and controversy across Dumuria, Dakope and Batiaghata, particularly within political circles and the Hindu community.
Party leaders said Jamaat initially announced provisional candidates for Khulna-4, Khulna-5, and Khulna-6.
