Dhaka, Nov. 17 -- Islami Andolan Bangladesh has said the death sentence handed to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the July Uprising crimes against humanity case "fulfilled the expectations of the oppressed".

On Monday, Secretary General Yunus Ahmad said the verdict reflects justice and will stand as a "milestone" in Bangladesh's political history.

He also said it will serve as "a deterrent against the abuse of state power and oppression of citizens".

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumdar delivered the verdict in the first case of crimes against humanity related to attempts to suppress the July Uprising.
