Dhaka, Feb. 21 -- Calling a free press essential for democracy, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon says he sees himself as a "guardian of the media", responsible for ensuring journalists can work independently and without intimidation.

He made the remarks at a discussion marking the Language Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day at the Barishal District Shilpakala Academy on Saturday.

"I am responsible, as the minister of information, for presenting all government plans before the nation. That cannot be done alone. The media will do it," he said.
