Dhaka, Jan. 30 -- Police have arrested former social welfare minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed in Rangpur city.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali said Nuruzzaman was taken into custody from a residence in the city's Central Road around 9:15pm on Thursday.

Nuruzzaman, a former MP from Lalmonirhat-2, was appointed state minister for social welfare on Jun 19, 2016.

After winning the 11th parliamentary election, he served as the minister for the same ministry until Jan 11, 2024.

Commissioner Majid said police acted on a tip-off and raided the house, leading to Nuruzzaman's arrest.

He faces multiple cases, including charges of assault, attempted murder, and murder during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
