Dhaka, July 5 -- ATM Shamsul Huda, a civil servant and former chief election commissioner (CEC), has died at the age of 83.

He passed away at his residence in Dhaka's Gulshan around 9am on Saturday, according to his brother-in-law Ashfaque Qaderi.

"The former CEC died at his home at 9am. He was later brought to the hospital where the doctors declared him dead," he said.

His funeral will be held after his daughter returns from the United States, he added.

Huda is survived by his wife and daughter.

As head of the Election Commission, he oversaw the ninth parliamentary elections in 2008.
