Dhaka, June 18 -- Jashore has recorded its first COVID-19-related death in nearly three years, marking a potential resurgence of the virus in the district.

Sheikh Amir Hossain Paru, 68, of Jahurpur in Bagharpara Upazila, died in the early hours of Wednesday while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Jashore General Hospital, said hospital superintendent Dr Hossain Shafayet.

This is the district's first reported fatality from the virus since mid-2022.

According to ICU in-charge Dr Robiul Islam Tuhin, Sheikh Amir had been admitted to the hospital's surgery department on Jun 5 with kidney-related complications. As he began exhibiting respiratory distress and other symptoms, doctors suspected a COVID infection.
