Dhaka, Jan. 30 -- A Dhaka court has sentenced former Awami League Member of Parliament Mizanur Rahman to eight years in prison on two counts of graft in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, or ACC, over owning assets in excess of known sources of income.

Judge Mohammad Abu Taher of the Dhaka Special Judge's Court-3 delivered the verdict in the case on Thursday.

He was sentenced to three years in prison and fined Tk 20,000 under Section 26 (2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004 and five more years in prison and fined Tk 30,000 under Section 27 (1) of the act. If the fines are unpaid, each of them will be punished by an additional three months in prison.
