Dhaka, Oct. 28 -- Justice Surya Kant has been named the next Chief Justice of India, succeeding BR Gavai, who is set to retire on Nov 24.
According to The Hindu, CJI Gavai on Monday recommended Justice Kant, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor to office.
The government had earlier sought his advice on the next appointment, it said.
The CJI, however, was on an official visit to Bhutan and submitted his recommendation immediately after returning to New Delhi.
The report added that he met Justice Kant with the recommendation letter on Oct 27, the first working day of the Supreme Court after the Deepavali holidays.
