Dhaka, Jan. 3 -- Assailants have gunned down a BNP leader in Jashore Sadar Upazila, sending shockwaves through the local political community.

The incident occurred at around 6:50pm in Shankarpur on Saturday, outside the office of former municipal councillor Shahed Hossain Nayan, according to Inspector (Operations) Mominul Haque of Jashore Kotwali Police.

The victim, Alamgir Hossain, 55, served as joint general secretary of the Jashore city BNP's Ward No. 7 unit.

Inspector Mominul said Alamgir was shot while travelling by motorcycle from Shankarpur Bottola towards his destination when he was ambushed near Golpata Mosque.

A single bullet struck the left side of his head, causing him to collapse instantly.
