Dhaka, Jan. 19 -- The Election Commission (EC) has upheld the candidacy of BNP nominee Kazi Shah Mofazzal Houssain Kaikobad for the Cumilla-3 constituency in the upcoming parliamentary election.

The commission announced the decision on Monday following a hearing on an appeal that challenged his eligibility.

Although the returning officer had initially validated Kaikobad's nomination during the initial screening, a petition was subsequently filed with the EC seeking its cancellation over allegations of dual citizenship.

All appeals were settled on Sunday except the one against Kaikobad, which remained pending.

The EC has now rejected the appeal, allowing the veteran politician to remain in the race.
