Dhaka, Nov. 18 -- The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has welcomed the death sentence given to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the International Crimes Tribunal case, saying it "established justice for victims of past atrocities".
On Monday night at a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee in Gulshan, Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the verdict "will bring peace to more than a thousand souls of thousands who fell victim to state terror during the July Uprising".
He said the global public opinion and the expectations of the Bangladeshi people demanded accountability for the crimes committed by "the fallen authoritarian government and its accomplices, including brutal killings and acts of genocide".
