Dhaka, Dec. 8 -- Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has criticised the tendency to vote for "symbols" rather than carefully evaluating candidates in elections.

"In that case we are obviously creating conditions for an autocrat to emerge," said Ahsan.

The culture of voting by "symbols" leads to the situation in which the same individual keeps coming back to power.

He made the remarks at the annual conference of the state-run research organisation Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, held at the Parjatan Bhaban in Agargaon.

He recalled the meeting former prime minister Sheikh Hasina had with businessmen just days before she had been thrown out of the power through the July Uprising.
