Dhaka, Nov. 23 -- A Bangladeshi man has been shot dead near the Sylhet border after members of India's Khasi community allegedly opened fire, according to police.

The incident occurred on Saturday night in the Lova Chora border area of Kanaighat Upazila, said Mohammad Abdul Awal, chief of the local police station.

The victim, 45-year-old Jamal Uddin, was from Kandla Bangatila in Kanaighat.

Police recovered Jamal's body early on Sunday after local residents reported finding it inside Bangladeshi territory with gunshot wounds. His body has been sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Residents said Jamal and several others had left their homes on Saturday night.
