Dhaka, May 28 -- The crescent moon signalling the start of Zil Hajj, the last month of the Islamic calendar, has been sighted, confirming Jun 7, a Saturday, for the celebration of Eid-ul-Azha.

The National Moon Sighting Committee announced the date in a briefing at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Wednesday.

Eid-ul-Azha is traditionally celebrated on the 10th day of Zil Hajj. Muslims sacrifice animals to mark the occasion, their second biggest festival after Eid-ul-Fitr.

Traditionally, both Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha have three days of public holidays. But the interim government has announced an extended 10-day holiday this Eid after a nine-day break in Eid-ul-Fitr.
