Dhaka, July 16 -- Gopalganj has turned into a battleground as gunfire echoed across town amid a series of violent incidents triggered by the National Citizen Party's "July march" and rally.
The deafening noise of improvised bombs, stun grenades, tear gas, and continuous running battles caused panic throughout the town, shuttering down most shops and restricting public movement.
The escalating unrest prompted the district administration to restrict public gatherings under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which prohibits the assembly of four or more people in an area.
An executive magistrate from the administration said, "Deputy Commissioner Md Kamruzzaman has imposed Section 144 across the district."
