Dhaka, Jan. 27 -- Bollywood singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing, saying he will not take on any new assignments in films.

The popular vocalist made the announcement in a Facebook post on Tuesday, thanking listeners for the support he has received over the years.

"Hello, Happy new year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners," Arijit wrote.

"I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey."

Over the past decade, Arijit has become one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Hindi cinema, according to the Times of India.
