Dhaka, Feb. 24 -- Additional Inspector General Ali Hossain Fakir has been named the new inspector general of police (IGP) amid an administrative shake-up after the new government took office.

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the decision in an order issued on Tuesday.

Ali had been serving as chief of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn).

A member of the 15th BCS police cadre from Bagerhat, Ali replaces Baharul Alam in the top post.

During his career, he has held several key positions, including superintendent of police in Netrokona, Feni and Magura, and deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Uttara Zone in 2008. He later served in a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
