United Kingdom, Sept. 19 -- Faye Dunaway has paid tribute to Robert Redford following his death earlier this week.

The 84-year-old actress called her former co-star a "heartfelt American original" in a touching tribute to the late actor.

She told the Daily Mail: "Robert Redford embodied the phrase, 'Le vrai elegance American' - The true American elegance (mis-attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville), in every way: physically, emotionally, artistically.

"He was a heartfelt American original. I am proud and fortunate to have called him a colleague and a friend."

The pair co-starred in Sydney Pollack's 1975 spy thriller Three Days of Condor, in which Redford played a CIA agent who kidnaps Dunaway's character.
