United Kingdom, Sept. 18 -- Bjorn Borg turned to drugs and alcohol because he was "lost" when he retired.

The five-time Wimbledon champion - who revealed in his new book Heartbeats that he experienced two near-fatal overdoses, the first in 1989 and another a few years later - quit the sport when he was just 26 years old and admitted he was unprepared for life away from the court because he had made no real "plan".

He told The Times newspaper: "When I stopped playing tennis, I didn't have a schedule. I'd wake up in the morning and say to myself: I can do everything, anything. I'm so happy.

"But I left tennis. I left my tennis friends. That was a big mistake. I left the people in tennis that I was around and I liked all these people.
