United Kingdom, Feb. 22 -- Akinola Davies Jr. dedicated his EE BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut to immigrant parents who sacrificed everything to give their children a better future.

The 40-year-old British-Nigerian filmmaker created the film My Father's Shadow - which follows two brothers exploring Lagos with their troubled dad during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis.

After he picked up the gong from Black Phone 2 star Ethan Hawke, 55, Davies Jr. - whose film explores themes of family, absence, and coming of age - gave a heartfelt acceptance speech.
