
Kenya, Aug. 15 -- I envisioned myself holding a flawless, angelic child when I first learnt I was expecting. I bought little stockings, went shopping for pink blankets, and visualised my house smelling like baby powder. God knows, nevertheless, my experience of becoming a mother became something I will always remember.
I sensed something wasn't right from the sixth month of my pregnancy. Every clinic visit ended with the same anxious expression on the nurse's face, and the baby was not kicking as much. One doctor gently informed me, "The baby's growth is abnormal." "She has an extraordinary head measurement and is underweight."
I sobbed as I headed home. Despite his best efforts to reassure me, I could see the concern in his eyes. When labour arrived, it was a lengthy and frightening experience.
