Kenya, May 10 -- Sir George Owino, fondly known as Big George or Big G, remains a towering figure in Kenya's consumer goods history as the mastermind behind the Big G chewing gum, a household name that captivated generations.

The larger-than-life gum, distinguished by its oversized pellets, bold red packaging, and yellow lettering, became a cultural staple, beloved by young and old alike from the 1970s through the early 2000s.

Owino's legacy began in 1971 when he made history as the first Kenyan employee of Wrigley East Africa, the regional arm of the global confectionery giant behind brands like Juicy Fruit, Double Mint, and Orbit.

Hired as a marketer, Owino was unimpressed by the standard gum pellets dominating the market. Driven by a vision for innovation, he conceptualized a larger gum, leading to the creation of Big G-the world's first chewing gum of its size at the time.

Launched with an aggressive nationwide marketing campaign, Big G quickly gained traction, rivaling market leaders by 1983. Its unique size and vibrant branding set it apart, cementing its place as a Kenyan favorite.

Owino's ingenuity propelled him through the ranks at Wrigley, eventually earning him the role of chairman for Wrigley East Africa, overseeing operations across several African countries.

Born in 1941 to Patrick Owidh and Maria Obiero, Owino grew up as an only child in humble circumstances.

He attended Sega Primary School and later Shimo la Tewa Intermediate School, laying the foundation for his remarkable career.

After retiring in 1998, Owino passed away in July 2004, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate.

Though few may know the face behind Big G, Sir George Owino's contribution to Kenya's confectionery industry and his trailblazing spirit remain unforgettable.
