Kenya, July 27 -- I used to think that hard work was all I needed. I believed that if I focused on my job, did it well, and avoided office politics, I would be promoted based on my skills. I was wrong. My name is Maureen. I'm 29 years old, and this is my story about how working in corporate Kenya almost broke me until I found strength in my spirit.

I graduated at the top of my class in human resources from one of the best universities in our country. I received first-class honours, which made my parents very proud at my graduation. A few months later, I got a job at a mid-sized tech company in Nairobi as a junior HR officer. From the beginning, I gave my best effort. I would stay late even when no one asked me to.
