Kenya, March 15 -- The United States and Israel have approached several East African countries regarding the potential resettlement of people from Gaza, according to a report by The Financial Times.
The nations contacted include Sudan, Somalia, and Somaliland, amid escalating tensions and conflicting responses from the region.
Sudan has outright rejected the proposal, with officials dismissing any suggestion of accepting displaced Gazans.
Meanwhile, authorities in Somalia and Somaliland have stated they were not formally approached, casting doubt on the extent of the outreach.
The discussions come as the U.S. is reportedly considering recognising Somaliland's independence in exchange for establishing a military base in the breakaway region, a possibility highlighted by The Heritage Foundation and AP.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from Arab nations, with AP and Al Jazeera reporting that several have labelled it "ethnic cleansing."
The accusations have intensified regional debates over the proposal, which remains in preliminary stages as diplomatic talks continue.
