Kenya, March 31 -- President William Ruto has accused his former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, of trying to blackmail him by asking for KSh 10 billion to help gather support in the Mt Kenya region.
Ruto made this serious claim during a press conference at Sagana State Lodge on Monday evening, as he started a five-day trip to promote development in the area.
While speaking to reporters, Ruto said that Gachagua threatened to hurt his presidency unless he received a large amount of money to support the Mt Kenya voters, an important group of voters for him.
"I have been visiting Mt. Kenya for the last 20 years. Our friendship didn't just start a few months ago," Ruto said, noting his long relationship with the region and calling Gachagua's demands an effort to take advantage of that relationship.
Ruto also mentioned that Gachagua often disagreed with government officials during his time as deputy, which led to problems and ultimately contributed to his removal in October 2024.
These comments give new insight into the issues between the two leaders, who worked together to win the 2022 elections.
Ruto's accusations come as he tries to strengthen his support in Mt. Kenya during changing political times.
Gachagua, who now openly criticises the current government, has not yet responded to Ruto's claims, and his removal from the deputy position and replacement by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki have created more divisions in the region.
As Ruto continues his tour, many will be watching to see how he works to heal these divisions and push forward his plans for development.
