Kenya, March 9 -- There was a lot of confusion at Gusii Stadium on Saturday during the big event to show off the new kit for Shabana FC, which is sponsored by SportPesa. A mother had to protect her child from flying plastic chairs during the chaos.
Many important people, including ODM leader Raila Odinga, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and Migori Governor Ochilo Ayako, were at the event. Things started to go wrong when the ceremony began.
The audience began chanting Raila Must Go! and Ruto Must Go!. The move is said to begin after Raila said in Gusii land that Fred Matiang'i will never be the president.
His statements angered the locals. Also, the pact Raila signed with Ruto fueled the anger hence chasing him.
Videos shared online showed people throwing plastic chairs, and many attendees ran to find safety. In the middle of this, a mother was seen bravely shielding her young child from the chaos.
Even though there were famous leaders to support the local football team, it did not help calm the situation.
Security staff had to step in to restore order, but the event was already affected by the unexpected trouble.
The officials from Shabana FC and SportPesa have not yet made a statement about what happened.
Authorities are looking into how the chaos started, but so far, no injuries have been reported.
What was supposed to be a celebration for the team's new partnership with the betting company has instead left many people shocked, overshadowing a proud moment for the Kisii community.
