Kenya, Feb. 8 -- February 8, 2025 - A shocking incident has unfolded at Kenyatta National Hospital where a patient, identified as Gilbert Kinyua, was found murdered in his hospital bed.
Kinyua, aged 39, was discovered with his throat slit in Ward 7B on the morning of February 7, 2025. He had been admitted to the hospital on December 11, 2024, for treatment of a cerebral disorder.
The murder has raised significant questions about security measures within the facility.
Kenyatta National Hospital, through its acting CEO Dr. William Sigilai, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and confirmed that the hospital fully cooperates with law enforcement.
An internal investigation has been launched alongside the police inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the murder.
Detectives from the homicide investigations team are actively probing the case, attempting to reconstruct the events by retrieving CCTV footage from areas surrounding the ward.
However, there are concerns about the functionality of the CCTV cameras at the time of the murder. The hospital's management, staff, and patients from neighbouring wards, along with the deceased's family, have been interrogated.
Netizens reflect shock and demand for accountability, questioning the safety of patients within what is considered one of the leading referral hospitals in Kenya. Calls for the resignation of key hospital administration figures have been noted, with many questioning the effectiveness of security protocols.
The police continue their search for leads and have urged anyone with information to come forward. This incident has sparked a broader discussion on patient safety and hospital security in Kenya.
