Kenya, April 11 -- Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali, also known as Moha Jicho Pevu, has hinted that he might leave the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party. He is upset about unfair practices before the party's local elections set for Saturday, April 12.
Ali claims that the party leaders are not respecting democracy and raised worries about the fairness of the internal elections.
In a strong message given in Mombasa, he announced that he would not take part in the upcoming elections. He accused party officials, including UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, of controlling the process to help specific candidates they favour.
"We will not join a process that is not fair," Ali said. He warned that he and his supporters might leave the party if these problems continue. "Our loyalty is to the people, not to those who are ruining the party's values," he added.
Ali first became the Nyali MP as an independent candidate in 2017 and joined UDA to win re-election in 2022. He stressed that he cares more about his people than being loyal to the party.
"We will confront you with the people, and we will ask many questions," he told the party leaders.
His announcement has caused a stir in politics, with many supporters backing Ali on social media and praising him for standing up against what they see as unfairness. However, some critics within UDA have tried to downplay his move, calling for unity as they look ahead to the 2027 general elections.
These local elections are important for UDA as it aims to strengthen its presence, but Ali's public disagreement could show deeper problems within the ruling party. If he does leave, it may change the political situation in Mombasa County.
