Kenya, March 30 -- The boxing world is in mourning following the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who passed away during a match against Ghanaian opponent John Mbanugu on Saturday night.
The incident occurred at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra during an undercard bout of the Ghana Professional Boxing League's Fight Night 15.
Olanrewaju, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, collapsed in the ring midway through the fight, shocking spectators and officials alike.
The 40-year-old fighter was reportedly leading on points when he suddenly staggered and fell to the canvas.
The referee immediately halted the match and called for medical assistance, but despite urgent efforts to revive him, Olanrewaju was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Preliminary reports suggest the cause of death may have been a cardiac arrest, though an official statement from the Ghana Boxing Authority is still pending. A viral video circulating online captured the harrowing moment, showing the two boxers exchanging blows before Olanrewaju's sudden collapse.
The Lagos-born boxer had a notable career, with 23 professional fights, including 13 wins, 12 by knockout. Known for his resilience and powerful punches, Olanrewaju was a respected figure in Nigerian boxing.
His death marks a sombre moment for the sport, with tributes pouring in from fans, fellow athletes, and officials across West Africa.
John Mbanugu, known as "Power," was declared the winner by knockout but expressed his devastation over the outcome. "I'm heartbroken. This isn't how I wanted it to end," he said after the fight.
The tragedy has reignited discussions about safety protocols in boxing, with calls for stricter medical checks and emergency response measures.
