Kenya, July 8 -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has put forward a nomination for U.S. President Donald Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. He praised Trump for his important work in creating the Abraham Accords and other efforts to promote peace in the Middle East.
This announcement was made during a significant meeting at the White House on Monday.
Netanyahu highlighted Trump's foreign policy successes, especially the agreements made in 2020 that improved relations between Israel and several Arab countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco.
Netanyahu called the Abraham Accords a "game-changer" for peace in the Middle East, crediting Trump's unique approach to diplomacy for breaking long-standing obstacles to peace.
"President Trump's leadership brought countries together, laying a foundation for stability and cooperation," Netanyahu said in a statement from his office.
In addition to the Abraham Accords, Netanyahu mentioned Trump's efforts to reduce global conflicts, including talks with North Korea and the 2025 Doha Agreement, which helped to calm tensions between groups in Qatar and U.S. allies in the area.
The nomination has been officially sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which is responsible for the award. The committee, located in Oslo, accepts nominations from heads of state and others, with a deadline of February 1, 2026, for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
This decision has created a lot of discussions. Supporters, including Israeli officials and U.S. conservative leaders, believe that Trump's ability to make deals changed the situation in the Middle East, reducing tensions and encouraging economic partnerships.
"The Abraham Accords showed that peace can happen without giving in to bad actors," said House Speaker Mike Johnson on X.
On the other hand, critics, including some European diplomats and Middle East experts, argue that the accords ignored the Palestinian issue, limiting their overall impact on lasting peace.
"Trump's policies focused more on appearances than real solutions," tweeted an important think tank based in Oslo. This is not the first time Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
In 2020 and 2021, he was nominated for his work on the Abraham Accords and talks with North Korea, but the prize went to other people.
The Nobel Committee is expected to announce their decision in October 2026, which will likely spark more discussions about Trump's foreign policy legacy.
Netanyahu's visit to Washington also included conversations about Iran's nuclear program and rebuilding Gaza, showing the ongoing cooperation between the U.S. and Israel.
As this nomination gains international attention, it emphasises Trump's significant yet controversial role in global diplomacy.
