Kenya, May 14 -- The Nairobi County Health Committee has ordered all Naivas Supermarket stores in the city to close immediately. This decision comes after reports that these stores were selling expired products.
The order was made during an emergency meeting led by Dr. Jane Mwangi, the head of health in the county.
Inspections showed that there were many food safety rule violations at Naivas stores, including the sale of expired dairy, meat, and packaged foods. This is a serious concern for the health of customers.
Dr. Mwangi stated, "This is a serious breach of public trust and safety. All Naivas stores in Nairobi must stop operations right away until we say otherwise. We will not put the health of our residents at risk."
The health committee has sent teams to make sure this order is followed. There could be heavy fines or even criminal charges for those who do not comply.
So far, Naivas Supermarket has not made an official statement, but sources say they are talking to health officials to resolve the problem.
This closure affects over 30 Naivas branches in Nairobi, impacting one of the largest retail chains in the city.
Customers are advised to report any expired products they may have bought from Naivas to the County Health Department.
