Kenya, Aug. 16 -- I spent most of my youth in poverty since I was born and raised in a very lowly household in Kisii, where everyday struggles were the norm. Although my parents worked hard, they were never able to provide enough food for us, and our school fees were often paid late, which caused me to frequently miss lectures. I loved football from a very young age.

Every night, I would use a ball we formed by tying polythene bags together to play barefoot with other boys in the dusty field next to our hamlet. Football was more than just a game to me; it was a way to escape the despair that occasionally accompanied poverty.I secretly hoped that I would one day be acknowledged, don a national uniform, and prove to the world what a Kisii kid was capable of.As I got older, I joined a small local team.
