Kenya, Jan. 26 -- Lang'ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang'o, found himself heated as a crowd of eager supporters surrounded him in what appeared to be anticipation of a cash handout.
The move led to a brief scuffle when the MP, visibly trying to restore order, pushed one of the young men aside while urging the gathering to either form a line or designate someone to receive the money on their behalf.
The incident reflects a broader picture of the growing disconnect between Kenyan politicians and public members as many increasingly rely on monetary incentives to maintain support from disillusioned voters.
Such cash handouts seem to be the last remaining connection between Kenyans and their representatives.
Kenyans on social media condemned the legislator, saying:
"Langata constituents, please explain to the rest of Kenya what you understand when we talk about leadership qualities. How did you vote for a man who treats you with unmatched contempt?"
"The reason why I have no time for these politicians. Power gets into their head and thinks that they are superior to mwananchi."
