Kenya, June 2 -- A man was arrested in Kisii town after allegedly beating and locking his landlord in a toilet for 43 minutes over a dispute regarding unpaid rent.

The landlord had visited the tenant's residence to lock the door due to outstanding rent payments.

In response, the tenant, identified as a 32-year-old male, reportedly assaulted the landlord and confined him in a toilet for over 40 minutes before neighbours intervened and alerted authorities.

Kisii County Police Commander Charles Kases confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is in custody at Kisii Central Police Station.

"The suspect will face charges of assault and unlawful confinement," Kases said, adding that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

The landlord was treated for minor injuries at a local health facility and released. Residents of the area expressed shock at the incident, calling for amicable resolutions to landlord-tenant disputes.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court on June 3, 2025, as police continue to gather evidence.

Authorities have urged tenants and landlords to seek legal or mediated solutions to avoid such violent confrontations.
