Kenya, Feb. 25 -- Operations at the Africa Merchant Assurance Company (Amaco) in Kisii were interrupted on Tuesday when auctioneers came to the office to collect rent money that had not been paid, amounting to Ksh 297,000.
The auctioneers, working under a court order, tried to seize property from Amaco's Kisii branch, which is on Hospital Road in Magsons Building.
However, they faced strong opposition from a female staff member. She confronted them angrily and shouted insults at both the auctioneers and the journalists who were there to report on the event.
During the altercation, she hit a television journalist with a stamp while he was filming, and two auctioneers got hurt.
Police officers from Kisii Central Police Station were called to the scene but later left to discuss what to do next.
The complaint against Amaco was made by a woman named Rose Nyangweso. In July 2021, a court in Kisii ordered Amaco to pay Ksh 156,000 in damages. With added interest, legal costs, and court fees, the total amount owed became Ksh 297,000.
A judge named H.C. Keter instructed the auctioneers to take movable property from Amaco to settle the debt. The court also asked them to return by May 5, 2025, to report on what happened with the order or explain why they couldn't follow it.
